On Friday, November 12, we officially started the new semester at the festive event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Europa-Institut in the Auditorium Maximum of Saarland University.
The new students were officially welcomed with greetings from Dr. Susanne Reichrath as the Minister President's Representative for Higher Education, Science and Technology and Jo Leinen, former Member of the European Parliament, as well as current insights into the Europa-Institut by the directors Professor Marc Bungenberg and Professor Thomas Giegerich. Every year, 75 students from all over the world come to the campus and meet more than 70 lecturers from science and practice. In addition, last year's graduates received their diplomas.
At this occasion, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Annemarie Matusche-Beckmann, awarded an honorary doctorate to Professor Thomas Cottier. Professor Emeritus of European and International Business Law at the University of Bern, Senior Research Fellow and former Executive Director of the World Trade Institute, Cottier has significantly shaped the field of international trade law and Swiss-EU bilateral relations in science, practice and politics. Through his many years as a lecturer at the Europa-Institut, he has also rendered outstanding services to the traditional cooperation between the law faculties of the Universities of Saarland and Bern.
