Virtual competition with over 100 participating teams
The 2020 FDI Moot (Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot was planned to take place in Seoul, South Korea but due to the worldwide corona crisis, the whole competition was held virtually. The Saarland University – Europa-Institut team consisted of Afolabi Adekemi from Nigeria (LL.M. 2017/2018), Bianca Böhme from Germany (LL.M. 2019/2020), Rishabh Vohra from India (LL.M. 2019/2020) and Solomon Bagashvili from Georgia (LL.M. 2019/2020) with their coaches Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, Director of the Europa-Institut, Dr. Greg Lourie, Associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, Paris, and Andrés Eduardo Alvarado Garzón, LL.M., Research Assistant at the chair of Professor Bungenberg. The team worked intensively during the written and oral phases of the competition which took place from April to November 2020. During that time they participated in two Pre Moots (Prague, Czech Republic and St. Petersburg, Russia), from which they won the last one.
On the evening of 9 November 2020, the FDI International Arbitration Moot came to an end and the team achieved excellent results: In the end, they were the 3rd highest Ranked Team from the combined oral and written pleadings – an excellent result, given that more than 100 teams from all over the world took part in the moot. Also, one of the speakers, Bianca Böhme, received the Thomas Wälde Award as best advocate in the entire competition! We congratulate the team on their outstanding achievements!
